ELEMENTARY

Student Awareness is a series of school programs presented in grades one, three, seven and ten to students in all Decatur City Schools, Hartselle City Schools, Morgan County Schools and private schools upon request. The age appropriate programs are designed to make children knowledgeable of abusive and neglectful situations, to teach them how to respond to these situations, and to understand the feelings and emotions which might be associated with these situations. School children in Morgan County receive Student Awareness Programs four times as they grow and develop from ages six to sixteen. The programs also involve teachers, counselors and parents.

The two Elementary Student Awareness Programs include:

Tricky People
This program is presented to first graders by a trained volunteer teaching simple straightforward tools children should use to protect themselves. It is a one-day presentation that helps children recognize deceptive behavior, awaken feelings and intuitions, and build self confidence through video, song, dance and eight safety rules. The program lasts approximately 35 minutes and uses the Yello Dyno safety curriculum. The children learn to recognize lures that may be used to trick them and tell a trusted adult, even if the person is not a stranger but someone they know.
The program is presented in the school setting, usually in a classroom or a commons area. The children receive a letter to take home to parents, which explains the material covered in the presentation. PACT encourages parents to follow up by using a parent child evaluation to talk to their kids about this very important topic at home. Parents are asked to sign and return the evaluation to the child's teacher, who in turn sends them to PACT for program evaluation. The teacher receives a follow-up packet of activities and information, as well as information on child abuse and neglect to pass on to the counselor. One first grade teachers evaluation of the program states, "Thank you for sharing the program with our students. It is a very important topic that must be shared with all children. The volunteer did an excellent job!"

Better Safe Than Sorry
This is a two-day program presented to third graders using a puppet show that deals with all types of abuse. Trained volunteers - two puppeteers and a facilitator - present this 45-minute program. On day one, children see a puppet show entitled "Better Safe Than Sorry," followed by a discussion of the abuse faced by the puppets. The puppets are third graders and they interact with teachers, a counselor and a principal. On day two, the facilitator shows the video "Harassment Hurts" and discusses the lessons it teaches. Topics covered include neglect, physical abuse (including bullying), sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Children learn simple, straightforward tools to protect themselves, to recognize that they are valuable and they deserve to be safe, to better understand child abuse and neglect issues, and that it is important to tell someone, even if an abuser is someone they know.

This program is presented in the school auditorium, library, or commons area. The teacher receives a packet of follow-up activities and information, as well as information on child abuse and neglect to pass on to the counselor. "The volunteers did an excellent job and our students are still talking about the puppets. This is a great way to get across very serious subjects," shared one third grade teacher following the two day program.
