MIDDLE SCHOOL

Student Awareness is a series of school programs presented in grades one, three, seven and ten to students in all Decatur City Schools, Hartselle City Schools, Morgan County Schools and private schools upon request. The age appropriate programs are designed to make children knowledgeable of abusive and neglectful situations, to teach them how to respond to these situations, and to understand the feelings and emotions which might be associated with these situations. School children in Morgan County receive Student Awareness Programs four times as they grow and develop from ages six to sixteen. The programs also involve teachers, counselors and parents.

There is one Student Awareness Program at the middle school level.

Ridin' the Roller Coaster
In this three day seventh grade program, the focus is on the importance of families, learning to cope when problems arise, anger management and child abuse prevention. It is presented by a volunteer to seventh graders in classroom setting. Each day's presentation lasts approximately 50 minutes (or one class period). On day one, the topics are "What is a Family," "Characteristics of a Healthy Family," and stress.  Students see a video entitled "Stress in the Family," followed by a discussion of problems faced by the families in the video and how they handled them. Since the emotion which most often rises to the surface when families face problems is anger, on day two the topic is "Anger Management." Students play Anger Bingo, and Anger Management techniques are discussed. Day three is devoted to defining and recognizing child abuse and neglect and a discussion of how abuse affects children. Students learn the many different types of families and that all families have value. They increase their knowledge of the value of positive family interactions and positive anger management skills, as well as increasing their awareness of child abuse and neglect. Teachers receive a packet of follow-up information and activities, and information on child abuse and neglect to pass on to the counselor. One seventh grade teacher said, "The presenter did a great job. She was very informative about the topics and held their attention well. She got the students involved and the students were very relaxed and felt comfortable with her discussion of the very important subjects covered."
