PARENTS AS TEACHERS (PAT)
greenline
All parents benefit from this parent education program that provides month-by-month guidelines on what to expect as your child grows and develops. This will help parents give their children the best possible start in life. PACT offers PAT to the community, as well as to Decatur City high school students.

Being a Parent is Hard Work
In the first few years, children learn more and at a faster pace than at any other time in life. You help shape your child's future through the kinds of experiences you provide. Your baby was born to learn, and as a parent you are your child's first and most important teacher.

Parents as Teachers is here to help you!
Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a parent education and family support program serving families throughout pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten, usually age 5.
Parents are supported by PAT-certified parent educators trained to translate scientific information on early brain development into specific when, what, how and why advice for families. By understanding what to expect during each stage of development, parents can easily capture the teachable moments in everyday life to enhance their child's language development, intellectual growth, social development and motor skills.

As a PAT Family, you receive:

•

Personal visits, where your parent educator will share age-appropriate child development and parenting information, help you learn to observe your child, and address your parenting concerns.

•

Each year, an estimated one million cases of suspected child abuse and neglect are substantiated.

•

Shaken Baby Syndrome is the number one cause of brain injury in infants. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER Shake a Baby!

•

Making sure your baby goes to sleep on his or her back provides the best protection against SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

•

Babies are born learning! During the first three years of life, the brain is forming connections that will determine a lifetime of skills and potential. Early experiences affect how the brain becomes "wired."

•

Relationships with other people early in life are the major source of emotional and social development.

Independent evaluations show PAT works!
PAT children:

•

AT age 3 are significantly more advanced in language, social development, problem solving and other cognitive abilities than comparison children.

•

Score higher on kindergarten readiness tests and on standardized measures of achievement in early grades.
PAT parents:

•

Are more involved in their children's schooling.

•

Are more confident in their parenting role and read more to their children.

What do other parents say about Parents as Teachers?

•

"I am a mother of two and I wish when I had my first child there was such a program.  With this program, I have learned to interact more with both of my children.  I support this program completely."• "I found the program to be a unique and helpful place where I can come with questions about children's development.  It has made me more aware of what's out there in the community."

•

"Our son is 16 months of age and sometimes he likes to throw a temper tantrum.  The information that our Parents as Teachers educator shared with us helped us to understand how to handle this situation when it arises."
