Auburn University's College of Human Sciences has received a grant totaling more than $8.2 million to support the work of the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative. AU's Center for Children, Youth, and Families within the college received the five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Family Assistance.

The initiative will support a variety of educational programs and resources offered throughout the state that support healthy relationships and marriages.

"Historically, this is an area that has not been a focus in programs and services for families, yet, we have research-based information that can be offered through educational programs to assist Alabamians build and sustain healthy relationships and marriages."

 

Target Audiences:  

  • Teens Grades 7-12, non-school based delivery.
  • Non-married parents
  • Stepfamily Couples & their Children
  • Singles
  • Premarital couples

Relationship Smarts

With the hands-on activities of the Relationships Smarts program, you can build the skills and self-awareness necessary for healthy relationships and friendships while understanding attractions, infatuations, and "smart dating."

Smart Steps

Smart Steps is for anyone who will be involved in step-parenting, or whose children will be involved in step-parenting. Are you divorced, remarried, ex-spouse remarried, or are you in a relationship with someone other than the parent of your children? This program will be about helping famiilies adapt to these changes in a way that works for everyone, with the focus always on what is best for the children.

Together We Can

Together We Can is a program designed for those who have children together but do not plan to marry. It is a class designed to improve co-parenting relationships of single parents. Even though parents are not involved in a romantic relationship any longer, children need a cooperative relationship focused on what is best for the children. 

Basic Training for Couples

Basic Training for Couples is a program designed to strengthen your marriage. Learn how to communicate better, handle conflict better, and keep the fire burning in your marriage. Go from "I thinking" to "We thinking." Work together to have a plan and a purpose for your marriage. 

How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk(ette)

Choosing a marriage partner requires the use of your head and your heart. Come learn what you need to KNOW about another person that predicts how they will be in marriage, and learn how to develop a love relationship in a healthy way!
